12 GROUPS. 32 TEAMS ADVANCE.

The 48 teams were divided into 12 groups of four. Every team played three group matches, with the top two from each group qualifying automatically alongside the eight best third-place teams.

Spain's run through the 32-team knockout field included a 2–1 quarter-final win over Belgium, a 2–0 semi-final win over France and the 1–0 extra-time victory over Argentina in the final.
