12 GROUPS. 32 TEAMS ADVANCE.
The 48 teams are divided into 12 groups of four. Every team plays three group matches. The top two teams from each group qualify automatically.
The eight best third-place teams also qualify, producing a 32-team knockout field. A champion must then survive five consecutive elimination matches.
