How Many Teams Are in World Cup 2026?
There are 48 teams in World Cup 2026, a record expansion from the 32 teams that contested every tournament from 1998 through 2022. FIFA approved the larger field to give more nations - especially from under-represented confederations in Africa, Asia, North America and Oceania - a genuine route to the finals, and to grow the global reach of the event.
More teams means more football. The 2026 edition features 104 matches across 39 days, up from 64 matches in 2022. That is a longer tournament with games almost every day from June 11 onward, so fans following multiple nations will have far more live action to watch than ever before. The three host nations - USA, Canada and Mexico - qualify automatically, leaving 45 places to be decided through continental qualifying and play-offs.
The World Cup 2026 Format: 48 Teams, 12 Groups of 4
The World Cup 2026 format uses 12 groups of four teams. Each of the 48 qualified nations is drawn into one of 12 groups (A to L), and every team plays the other three sides in its group once during the group stage, which runs from June 11 to 27 and accounts for 72 of the 104 matches.
This is a brand-new structure. Previous 32-team World Cups used eight groups of four with only the top two advancing. The expanded 12-group design keeps the familiar four-team groups fans know, while adding an extra knockout round - the Round of 32 - to absorb the larger field. The result is a deeper, longer tournament with a full month of group football before the elimination rounds begin.
| Stage | Dates | Matches |
|---|---|---|
| Group stage | Jun 11 - 27 | 72 |
| Round of 32 | Jun 28 - Jul 3 | 16 |
| Round of 16 | Jul 4 - 7 | 8 |
| Quarter-finals | Jul 9 - 11 | 4 |
| Semi-finals | Jul 14 - 15 | 2 |
| Third-place play-off | Jul 18 | 1 |
| Final | Jul 19 | 1 |
How Teams Advance: Top 2 Plus 8 Best Third-Placed Sides
32 of the 48 teams advance to the knockout stage. From each of the 12 groups, the top two teams qualify automatically for the Round of 32. That accounts for 24 places. The remaining 8 spots go to the best third-placed teams across all 12 groups, ranked by points, goal difference and goals scored.
- Win or finish runner-up in your group of four and you are through - 24 teams qualify this way.
- Finish third and you still have a chance: the eight highest-ranked third-placed sides also progress.
- The Round of 32 then feeds into the Round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final on July 19 - a single-elimination bracket the rest of the way.
In practice, two wins in the group stage will usually be enough to advance, and even a single win plus a draw can be sufficient for a third-placed side. It is a format that rewards consistency and keeps almost every group competitive into the final round of matches. See the full match calendar on our World Cup 2026 hub.
