How Many Teams Are in World Cup 2026?

There are 48 teams in World Cup 2026, a record expansion from the 32 teams that contested every tournament from 1998 through 2022. FIFA approved the larger field to give more nations - especially from under-represented confederations in Africa, Asia, North America and Oceania - a genuine route to the finals, and to grow the global reach of the event.

More teams means more football. The 2026 edition features 104 matches across 39 days, up from 64 matches in 2022. That is a longer tournament with games almost every day from June 11 onward, so fans following multiple nations will have far more live action to watch than ever before. The three host nations - USA, Canada and Mexico - qualify automatically, leaving 45 places to be decided through continental qualifying and play-offs.

The World Cup 2026 Format: 48 Teams, 12 Groups of 4

The World Cup 2026 format uses 12 groups of four teams. Each of the 48 qualified nations is drawn into one of 12 groups (A to L), and every team plays the other three sides in its group once during the group stage, which runs from June 11 to 27 and accounts for 72 of the 104 matches.

This is a brand-new structure. Previous 32-team World Cups used eight groups of four with only the top two advancing. The expanded 12-group design keeps the familiar four-team groups fans know, while adding an extra knockout round - the Round of 32 - to absorb the larger field. The result is a deeper, longer tournament with a full month of group football before the elimination rounds begin.

How Teams Advance: Top 2 Plus 8 Best Third-Placed Sides

32 of the 48 teams advance to the knockout stage. From each of the 12 groups, the top two teams qualify automatically for the Round of 32. That accounts for 24 places. The remaining 8 spots go to the best third-placed teams across all 12 groups, ranked by points, goal difference and goals scored.

  1. Win or finish runner-up in your group of four and you are through - 24 teams qualify this way.
  2. Finish third and you still have a chance: the eight highest-ranked third-placed sides also progress.
  3. The Round of 32 then feeds into the Round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final on July 19 - a single-elimination bracket the rest of the way.

In practice, two wins in the group stage will usually be enough to advance, and even a single win plus a draw can be sufficient for a third-placed side. It is a format that rewards consistency and keeps almost every group competitive into the final round of matches. See the full match calendar on our World Cup 2026 hub.

World Cup 2026 Host Countries & All 16 Host Cities

World Cup 2026 is co-hosted by three countries - the USA, Canada and Mexico - across 16 host cities. It is the first World Cup ever shared by three nations and the first to span an entire continent. The United States stages the bulk of the tournament with 11 cities, Mexico hosts in 3 cities and Canada in 2. The featureCards grid below lists every host city grouped by country.

Two venues carry special significance. The opening match kicks off on June 11, 2026 at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, making it the first stadium ever to host matches at three different World Cups. The final is played on July 19, 2026 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, just outside New York City. For region-by-region viewing details, see our guides for the USA, Canada and other markets.

USA - 11 Host Cities

Atlanta · Boston · Dallas · Houston · Kansas City · Los Angeles · Miami · New York/New Jersey · Philadelphia · San Francisco Bay Area · Seattle

The United States stages the most matches, including the final at MetLife Stadium (New York/New Jersey) on July 19, 2026.

Canada - 2 Host Cities

Toronto · Vancouver

Canada hosts on both coasts, with Vancouver anchoring the West Coast schedule alongside Seattle just across the border.

Mexico - 3 Host Cities

Mexico City · Guadalajara · Monterrey

Mexico City's Estadio Azteca hosts the opening match on June 11, 2026 - the first stadium to feature at three World Cups.

Key World Cup 2026 Stadiums & Venues

The World Cup 2026 venues stretch from Vancouver and Seattle in the west to Boston and New York in the east, and south to Mexico City. Sixteen stadiums share the 104 matches, with the host nations' biggest and most modern arenas selected to handle the expanded field and record crowds.

Standout venues

  • Estadio Azteca, Mexico City - hosts the opening match on June 11, 2026 and becomes the first stadium to feature at three World Cups (1970, 1986 and 2026).
  • MetLife Stadium, New York / New Jersey - stages the final on July 19, 2026, the showpiece of the tournament.
  • West Coast hubs - the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Seattle and Vancouver anchor the Pacific side of the schedule.
  • Mexican heat and altitude - Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey bring atmosphere and a home-continent edge for CONCACAF sides.

With games spread across multiple time zones, kick-off times will vary widely - another reason a flexible, all-in-one viewing setup matters. Our hub page tracks the schedule city by city.

World Cup 2026 Qualified Teams: Who Is In So Far

The three host nations - USA, Canada and Mexico - are the only teams guaranteed a place, qualifying automatically as co-hosts. The other 45 spots are still being decided through each confederation's qualifying campaigns and the inter-confederation play-offs, so the full 48-team line-up completes closer to the tournament.

The expanded format means every continent gets a larger allocation than before, opening the door to first-time qualifiers and returning nations alike. As confederations confirm their qualifiers, the picture for the 12 groups will take shape. Rather than guess, we recommend bookmarking our World Cup 2026 hub, where we track confirmed qualified teams, the group draw and the schedule as they are announced - and our channels guide for exactly where each team's matches will be broadcast.

World Cup 2026 Favourites: The Teams to Watch

The traditional powers head into World Cup 2026 among the favourites. Reigning champions Argentina, alongside France, Brazil, England, Spain and Germany, are the nations most often listed near the top of the betting and the ones neutral fans will want to track from the group stage onward.

  • Argentina - the defending champions, looking to go back-to-back.
  • France - 2022 finalists with a deep, talented squad.
  • Brazil - the record five-time winners, always among the favourites.
  • England and Spain - perennial contenders with strong recent tournament form.
  • Germany - four-time champions chasing a return to the latter stages.

With 48 teams, expect surprises too: the larger field gives in-form outsiders and host-continent sides more room to make a run. Whoever you are backing, the safest bet is making sure you can actually watch every match - in your language, in the best quality available.
